The Beatles - “In My Life”
This is another of my favorite songs.
I want it sung at my funeral.
Last all-time favorite song, I posted: Imagine.
There are places I’ll remember
All my life though some have changed
Some forever not for better
Some have gone and some remain
All these places have their moments
With lovers and friends I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life I’ve loved them all
But of all these friends and lovers
There is no one compares with you
And these memories lose their meaning
When I think of love as something new
Though I know I’ll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I’ll often stop and think about them
In my life I love you more
Though I know I’ll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I’ll often stop and think about them
In my life I love you more
In my life I love you more
Several mentioned that they enjoyed Bette Midler’s cover of this song. So, I surfed around, and I can see why. It’s beautiful. But, I also found a version by Judy Collins. And honestly, I think I like it a little more than Bette’s! I think because she sings it like an ode; which is predominantly how I view this song (as a funeral song).

Steve says, “I’m gonna have to check it out!”

I don’t think I ever heard this song until now, Thanks Steve for bringing it to my attention. I was a huge Beatles fan but lost interest by the time they released their White album. I susect it is from there. They were innocent and cute British boys then they got on drugs and after they came back form India they sucked big time.
Steve says, “It was on their ‘Rubber Soul’ album.”

Oh, dear! No, give me the Beatles! Tho, I didn’t mind her version.
I don’t think I care what they play at my funeral.
I don’t plan on being there.
I hope to be doing more fun and highly more important things!
Steve says, “I agree, The Beatles, although I haven’t heard the Bette version.”

I’ve heard so many versions of that song at weddings I’ve presided over. Funny how folks will pick it for different celebrations.
Steve says, “I’m a romantic. I see my future husband singing that at my funeral. Call me a goof!”

Hey Goof! You there? Get a lesbian with a guitar to sing it at your marriage!
Get back Ed - I have a taser now!
Steve says, “I want some voluptuous straight woman to sing it at my wedding. And Tasers don’t phase, Ed. They make him hornier..”

I know I just tried! Back Ed! Back!
how about a gospel choir?
Steve says, “The only thing that works is flashing shiny objects at him.”

umm then whip out your chrome codpiece! Please, Sir!
Steve says, “I think you should wear your tiara, Uncle Z.”

I’ll go get it!
btw: that thing was for a non-profit auction! I’ve never had so many diamonds on my body. Hint!
Steve says, “I’ve had female, ex-girlfriends use better lines. Harummmph!”
October 14, 2007 at 9:52 pm
There’s a reason she is your ex-girlfriend - heh
Steve says, “Well, it had nothing to do with diamonds!”

That first line, “There are places I’ll remember”, has become a best-selling tee-shirt here in New Orleans.

Yes, a timeless piece. I love it too!

That is a great song and it conjures up so many memories for me. Thanks for that trip down memory lane.

You know, something weird happens to me… I love The Beatles, but I love best covers made out from their songs. For example, I’ve always thought “Across the Universe” is a beautiful song, but this http://youtube.com/watch?v=8gLWTtlMwo4, which is Fiona Apple’s version is just sublime. the same happens with Stereophonic’s “Don’t Let Me Down”, Eddie Vedder’s “You’ve got to hide your love away”, and Sarah McLachlan’s “Blackbird”.
Don’t hate me, I still think they’re great.

How anybody can say they sucked big time after coming back from india is incredible…but we’ll leave that debate alone!
I recently travelled up to northern Scotland, to a village called Durness, where they have a John Lennon memorial, he used to go there as a child with his Aunt Mimi, and the lyrics from In My Life are engraved on it. A beautiful epitaph, in a beautiful desolate place. Also, check out George Martin’s orchestral version of In My Life, with Sean Connery narrating the words, lovely.
Steve says, “Thanks for stopping by and I agree wholeheartedly. The Beatles opened the door for experimental pop music; which brought the likes of Beck and Pink Floyd into our worlds. I originally had those Lennon hand-written, lyrics in this entry, but took it down. It was hard to read on the website.
Cheers.”

So I’m not the only one who has picked out music for my funeral?? Phew!
I always joke (kind of) that it will be Vicki Sue Robinson’s “Turn the Beat Around“. But I always come back to Iris DeMent’s “My Life”
I gave joy to my mother
I made my lover smile
I can give comfort to my friends when their hurting
I can make it seem better for awhile
eh. Maybe I’ll just do ‘Baby Got Back’.
Steve says, “I’m sure many have planned funerals in their head. They just feel ’stupid’ admitting it. I have no shame on this blog; and will discuss such things
The above quote is beautiful! If you play ‘Baby Got Back’, I’d be too afraid I’d be dancing at your funeral. And that might offend some of your family.”

I love the whole For The Boys soundtrack featuring Bette.
I always looked forward to Friday nights when this was the opening song on the show Providence.

I love this song! It has been my favorite since I was little. My aunt sang it at my wedding to just a piano, made everyone cry. It was closer to the Bette Middler version but not quite.

This is the deal: My blog has been rebooted. But I can’t, in good faith, not have my favorite songs, of all time, on this site. So, I’m reposting an entry from last year (which is why there are comments previous to this current post date). I know, I’m technically cheating, but I heart music!
